Samenvatting

The Political Self-consciousness of Craft Guild Members in Brabant: A Long-term Perspective (13th-18th century)

The history of late medieval and early modern craft guilds has long appealed to the imagi- nation. Not only were these organisations very important for the development of the urban economy, they had also gathered political power in the Low Countries. In this article, two specialists from the history of the craft guilds investigate how these associations have acquired such an important position. In the meantime, they also study their importance for the political history of the Brabantine cities. Among other things, they focus on the corporate ideas of the crafts and argue that these most likely have older roots than generally assumed.
