Jan Claudius de Cock (1667-1735): ‘ A worthy old master in the arts’?
Jan Claudius de Cock (1667-1735) was a productive and versatile sculptor from Brussels. Nevertheless, he is an underexposed and undervalued artist. A plausible explanation is that a significant part of his work has ended in private hands or inaccessible places in different countries. This article aims to present an indicative overview of his works. Among these works are interior pieces for churches, busts, tombs and garden ornaments and drawings. His work for stadtholder William III in Breda marked the beginning of his career. Based on our findings we discuss the former and current significance of Jan Claudius de Cock as an artist and can stimulate a reassessment of his craftsmanship.
