Healing in the damage: Towards novel perspectives on human-environment entanglements in the Americas - (121) 2026This special issue presents "healing" as a dynamic analytical lens to evaluate human and non-human relations during our current planetary crisis. Moving away from a purely damage-centered focus, the authors use decolonial and feminist frameworks to explore how centering local and Indigenous perspectives can spark innovative responses to environmental challenges. They map out healing across three main dimensions—its transformative potential, its non-linear temporalities, and its material integration of diverse knowledges—while openly acknowledging the socio-political challenges of translating this concept across distinct cosmologies. Ultimately, they argue that healing should not be viewed as a static solution, but rather as an evolving, inherently incomplete, and ongoing process of transformation. Read more |

Understanding Latin America and the Caribbean - (120) 2025This special issue commemorates the 60th anniversary of ERLACS by offering a range of exploratory perspectives on pressing issues in Latin American studies, including updated perspectives on governance, populism, oligarchies, and post-truth in the region. This issue presents innovative approaches that connect the territorial justice of Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples with climate urbanism, and that incorporates "more-than-human" approaches in the Caribbean. In addition, this issue invites us to rethink area studies by placing the Caribbean at the centre of global changes and by evaluating current trends in Latin American studies scientific publishing, and the impact of artificial intelligence. Violent configurations of power in Mexico - (112) 2021How can we account for levels of violence, numbers of internally displaced people and territorial fragmentation in Mexico that are higher than most civil wars? We build on a comparison with civil wars to account for the specificities of the regional configurations of violence in Mexico. We argue that armed actors, far from contesting the existing political institutions and system, conform to the social order to whose reproduction they thus contribute.
