Double Open & Fully Transparent Review Policy.

At Futures Reframed, we are committed to fostering an inclusive, progressive academic environment that emphasizes innovation and collaboration. We believe that intellectual progress thrives when creativity, free thinking, and enjoyment are preserved through constructive feedback. To reflect these values, we have implemented a peer review process designed to support authors in enhancing their work while also promoting transparency in academic publishing. We aim to achieve that by conducting the process in an open and transparent manner, instead of the traditional, anonymous reviews. This means we work with a double open review system: both authors and reviewers know of each other who they are – the editors match them with care, taking sensitivities into consideration where needed. We also encourage and make space for innovative and experimental forms of peer review, and stick to full transparency about the review process: readers will just not read the end-result (the paper) but next to that, get access to the reviews, too.

Kind and Collaborative Review Approach

Our reviewers are encouraged to provide ‘kind reviews’, which focus on constructive, respectful, and insightful feedback. The goal of this approach is not only to evaluate the work but also to uplift and guide authors towards improvement. By fostering a supportive atmosphere, we aim to create a community where ideas can flourish and where every contributor feels valued. In combination with the open and transparent review process, we hope that this approach will help reviewers and authors truly collaborate and co-contribute to the article. Furthermore, in order to foster innovation and free thinking, at Futures Reframed, we encourage and provide the space for experimental formats of the review process. This can entail in-text collaborative work between authors and reviewers, but since the process is not anonymous, it can also include direct zoom meetings or even paper-centered, in-person workshops. We are also open to new review format ideas coming from authors as well as reviewers.

AI Policy

At Futures Reframed, personal and creative exploration is central. We do not see AI as a replacement for thinking or writing. Writing ís thinking. What matters to us is why you - from your unique position, experience, and knowledge - could write this article. We want to be moved by your work, even when it is not perfect.

We do not prohibit the use of AI. However, we do reject submissions that, partly due to AI use, become too generic, impersonal, or no longer recognizable as the work of a specific author. Research suggests that heavy reliance on AI can weaken an author’s sense of ownership. We consider this a risk to both authorship and intellectual contribution. The same principles apply to reviewers. We expect reviewers to refrain as much as possible from using AI tools in the review process to protect the confidential, sensitive, or unpublished materials to be uploaded in public AI systems.

At the same time, we aim to be inclusive. For some authors - for example, those who did not grow up writing in English - AI can support language correction or structural clarity. This is acceptable under the following conditions:

  • AI supports the writing process but does not replace thinking;
  • In case of doubt, regarding the use of AI in the creative process, the reviewers consult/give feedback to the author(s), for example during a video call as part of the review process;
  • AI-generated outputs are not used or cited as primary or secondary sources;
  • AI is used with care and accountability, avoiding plagiarism, copyright violations, fabricated data, or misleading claims;
  • AI-generated images are only used when integral to the argument and are critically contextualized with proper attribution.

In practice, this means your voice, perspective, and responsibility come first. AI may function as a tool, but never as the source of your text.
