A bridge between Dutch Sign Language education and research: Perspectives from a teacher and a researcher

Abstract

In this paper, we reflect on the gap between Dutch Sign Language (NGT) education and research, and how to bridge this gap. We offer our perspectives on the role of teacher and of researcher. After a brief overview of the current teaching and research landscape in the Netherlands, we provide examples of the gap between these two domains. Our suggestions are (i) to invest in key figures, who should be very familiar with at least the deaf community, NGT teaching practices, and/or NGT research, and (ii) for teachers and researchers to cooperate more often.
