Samenvatting

The focus of this article is on the early nineteenth-century everyday woman in Amsterdam, based on the drawings of the artist Gerrit Lamberts (1776-1850). The representation of women to men in canonical history is disproportionate. Art can be a starting point to learn more about the early nineteenth-century women. During the 1800s, gender roles became stricter and women were bound more to their homes and appeared less in public. This article shows how nonetheless a lot of information can be retrieved about early nineteenth-century women, through analysing the women’s external characteristics in Lamberts’s drawings in combination with the depicted locations, Lamberts’ creativity and established knowledge about nineteenth-century Amsterdam its everyday women.
