This article examines a historical event between 1706 and 1712, where Sultan Muzhir al-Din of the Maldives lost his throne and sought the help of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) to reclaim it. The new sultan, Muzaffar Muhammad Imaduddin II, also contacted the VOC, urging them not to assist Muzhir. As a result, the VOC became embroiled in a diplomatic struggle for the Maldivian throne. The study showcases Maldivian history using VOC sources, providing insights into the VOC’s interactions with smaller Asian states. This is achieved by analyzing multiple perspectives, including letters from Muzhir al-Din, Muzaffar Muhammad Imaduddin II, and VOC officials. The article elucidates the complex political and diplomatic dynamics, offering a unique insight into a previously untold story.
