Samenvatting

At the time of writing (November 2024), two wars with major global consequences are raging in the world: the war in Ukraine (February 2022-) and the wars in Gaza (October 2023-) and Lebanon (September 2024-). The leaders of the current aggressors in these conflicts, Russia and Israel, skillfully exploit history in their war rhetoric. This article examines the philosophical notions of history behind the rhetoric of the Russian president Vladimir Putin and Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

  • Joost Oosterhuis

    Joost Oosterhuis volgt de onderzoeksmaster Geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hij is gespecialiseerd in de relatie tussen oorlog en de samenleving in vroegmodern Europa. Naast zijn studie werkt hij bij de bibliotheek van de Universiteit van Amsterdam en is hij redacteur bij Skript Historisch Tijdschrift.
