This research looks at the use of the term ‘primitive culture’ in British newspapers in the nineteenth century. After Edward Tylors’ scientific book Primitive Culture came out in 1871, the usage of the term increased significantly in newspapers all across Britain. The premise of the book was the idea that civilisations that had not yet reached the development of British society were less mature and needed to be treated as such. Tylor’s influence on the view of the British public towards non-native cultures is analysed in this article.
