This article is an analysis of Theodor Adorno’s critique of regulation in the American film industry. It first provides an extensive background of the historical importance, the boundaries, and the functioning of the system of (self)regulation, roughly between 1934 and 1952. Secondly, this history aims to historically contextualize Adorno as a thinker, enabling an informed interpretation of his critique. Finally, it will reflect on the value and limitations of Adorno for current day historiography on regulation in the American film industry.
