Reinhart Koselleck, Aleida Assmann, historical conciousnessSamenvatting
In her recent work on the crisis of the ‘modern time regime’, literary scholar Aleida Assmann (1947-) calls into question Reinhart Koselleck’s influential theory on the rise of modern historical consciousness. She argues that the development of a modern conception of
time cannot be captured in a singular linear history. This paper aims to provide insight into the theoretical and normative perspective underlying Koselleck’s approach on the one hand and Assmann’s on the other. By way of a comparison it seeks to demonstrate how authors make implicit theoretical and normative choices, which largely determine the outcome of their analyses.
