Medieval lapidaries are placed by existing secondary literature in a medical context. This article argues that lapidaries and medieval medical practices are separate fields. The article shows how most lapidary texts tie in to medieval medical theory, yet also shows that the stones are used for different purposes in everyday life. The stones used in medieval medical practises also don’t match the descriptions given in the lapidaries. In other words, the lapidary tradition is carved in stone, while medical practises were evolving all the time.
