Samenvatting

During the Second World War, Bureau Inlichtingen (BI) gathered intelligence about the political, economic and military situation in the occupied Netherlands. BI passed this information to the Dutch government in exile. During this process, intelligence had to pass through levels of information filters. At one of the levels, BI chose what information would be sent to the government and what not. From this study it can be concluded that on all subjects except for the situation of Jewish people, BI gave a representative overview of the developments in the occupied Netherlands. The reason for this silence about the persecution of Jews, despite BI gathering multiple clear reports on this subject, remains unclear. The findings of this study add to the discussion among historians about when the allied governments knew about the mass murder taking place in the Nazi concentration camps.
