Author Guidelines

Authors are invited to make a submission to this journal. All submissions will be assessed by an editor to determine whether they meet the aims and scope of this journal. Those considered to be a good fit will be sent for peer review before determining whether they will be accepted or rejected.

Before making a submission, authors are responsible for obtaining permission to publish any material included with the submission, such as photos, documents and datasets. All authors identified on the submission must consent to be identified as an author. Where appropriate, research should be approved by an appropriate ethics committee in accordance with the legal requirements of the study's country.

An editor may desk reject a submission if it does not meet minimum standards of quality. Before submitting, please ensure that the study design and research argument are structured and articulated properly. The title should be concise and the abstract should be able to stand on its own. This will increase the likelihood of reviewers agreeing to review the paper. When you're satisfied that your submission meets this standard, please follow the checklist below to prepare your submission.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The manuscript is written in either American English or British English spelling style consistently throughout the paper. It should be noted that no language-editing is performed by the manuscript after acceptance, so make sure your manuscript is free from textual errors.
  • The manuscript has not been previously published, nor is it under review with another journal. If another manuscript drawing on the same dataset has been submitted or published previously, please explain how it differs from this manuscript in your comments to the editor.
  • The title page and the manuscript (including abstract, tables, figures, and references) are in Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or RTF document file format.
  • The manuscript and supplemental files are fully anonymised.
  • The manuscript adheres to the word limits as defined for the respective article types.
  • The manuscript is prepared and formatted in strict accordance with our Submission Preparation Guidelines.
  • The author agrees with all the journal's policies.
  • The submitted work adheres to the international standards for authors as proposed by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).

Research Paper

Original research papers report empirical studies (based on quantitative and/or qualitative methods) and range between 4,000 and 8,000 words (excluding abstract, notes, tables and figures, references, and supplements).

Registered Report

Registered Reports report empirical studies but a difference with the traditional original research papers is that peer-review precedes data-collection. This type of article follows a two-stage procedure which is described in the Submission Preparation Guidelines.  

Theoretical paper

Theoretical papers present innovative thoughts on existing theories and models for in the the digital health field, or present new theoretical considerations. The specifications are the same as for original research papers. 

Methodological Paper

Methodological papers focus on methodological issues relevant for the digital health field and/or present innovative research designs, measurement approaches, or analytical techniques. The specifications are the same as for original research papers.

Review Article

Review articles synthesize the existing literature or present a meta-analysis of published results or multiple data sets. They contain up to 10,000 words, excluding abstract, notes, tables and figures, references, and supplements.

Research report

Research reports focus on methods, such as the development of a new questionnaire, or they feature small empirical studies that do not require an extensive theoretical rationale. They contain up to 4,000 words, excluding abstract, notes, tables and figures, references, and supplements.

The authors agree to the following license and copyright agreement:

  1. Authors retain copyright in their work.
  2. Authors grant the European Journal of Digital Health the right of first publication online on the internet.
  3. Authors retain copyright and grant the journal the right of first publication. Articles are published under the license Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), which allows others to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or to use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. When reused, the authorship of the work must be stated and reference made to the original publication in this journal. The full text of the license may be read under http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/.
  4. Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of their work, as long as the conditions of the CC BY 4.0 License are fulfilled and initial publication in the European Journal of Digital Health is acknowledged.
