Abstract: The pandemic and Mexican migrant smugglers' retirement plans

Mexican migrant smugglers know the risks of the trade and carry out this activity for a specific purpose. When they achieve this goal, they abandon the coyotaje. According to the business model, the motivation for migrant smugglers to engage in this activity is simple economic calculation, while the social model emphasises altruism. This article examines how the tightening of border control during the pandemic impacted the withdrawal plans of Mexican migrant smugglers. Using a qualitative methodology, twenty-eight migrant smugglers were interviewed. The interviewees delayed their retirement plans because, during the pandemic, the profitability of coyotaje increased, while the income of the legal businesses where they invested their savings decreased. To sum up, the business model explains the motivations of Mexican migrant smugglers better than the social model. 

Resumen

Los traficantes de migrantes mexicanos conocen los riesgos del oficio y realizan esta actividad con un propósito concreto. Cuando alcanzan ese objetivo abandonan el coyotaje. Según el modelo de negocio la motivación de los traficantes de migrantes para realizar esta actividad es el simple cálculo económico, mientras que el modelo social subraya el altruismo. Este artículo examina cómo impactó el reforzamiento del control fronterizo durante la pandemia en los planes de retiro de los traficantes de migrantes mexicanos. Mediante una metodología cualitativa, se entrevistó a veintiocho traficantes de migrantes. Los entrevistados retrasaron sus planes de retiro porque durante la pandemia la rentabilidad del coyotaje aumentó, al tiempo que mermaron los ingresos de los negocios legales donde invirtieron sus ahorros. Concluimos que el modelo de negocio explica mejor que el modelo social las motivaciones de los traficantes de migrantes mexicanos.
