Abstract

In this article, Martijn van der Burg discusses the controversy surrounding Máxima's statement that there is no clear-cut Dutch identity. The article attempts to unravel where the discussions went off track on a more conceptual level. It also reflects on the question of what lessons researchers can learn from this.

    Martijn van der Burg is historicus en als universitair docent cultuurgeschiedenis verbonden aan de Faculteit Cultuurwetenschappen van de Open Universiteit. Hij doceert onder meer over de geschiedenis van staats- en natievorming. Daarnaast is hij sinds 2018 redacteur van Locus.
