There has been a lively public debate for some time now about the possession and presentation of cultural artifacts from the former colonies in European museum collections. Many call for the decolonization of these collections, with decolonization being understood in different ways.

In this special issue, authors from various disciplinary backgrounds address the practices and legacies of natural history collections, scientists, social orders and forms of knowledge that are rooted in colonialism, yet have continued to exist after political decolonization.
