The declaration Nostra Aetate (1965) promised an end to the ‘teaching of contempt’, but its realisation was thwarted for decades. This article analyses the struggle over the Tridentine Mass as a mirror of this tension. It argues that the policies of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, aimed at ecclesiastical unity and continuity, legitimized the pre-conciliar liturgy and the theology of supersessionism embedded within it. This compromise led to a regression that severely damaged Jewish-Catholic dialogue. Only Pope Francis forced a radical correction. With Traditionis Custodes, he rejected liturgical ambiguity and unequivocally chose the theology of Vatican II. Thus, the Church was finally compelled to exchange its triumphalist self-image for a model of equal dialogue, thereby liturgically anchoring the spirit of Nostra Aetate.
