Roland Barthes' lezing van Sade

Abstract

In the middle of the last century many philosophers were interested in the novels of Marquis de Sade. These thinkers held that Sade made us aware of the latent and cruel nature of human sexuality. This means that they rely on Sade to formulate a timeless, ahistorical truth. In my essay, based on Roland Barthes’ Sade study, I argue that Sades eroticism should be understood as an exponent of modernity.

    Lode Lauwaert (1981) is promovendus in de filosofie aan de KU Leuven te België. Hij bereidt een dissertatie voor over de receptie van de romans van Marquis de Sade in de Franse filosofie. Zijn meest recente publicaties zijn: “Batailles lezing van Sade. Genot en literatuur als expressies van kracht,” “De Beauvoir over het leven en werk van Sade” en “Van klassieke naar moderne literatuur. Roland Barthes over het grensgeval Sade.”
