Castle Etzenrade: Research into a Lost Castle (2016–2023)

The archaeological research carried out at the site of Castle Etzenrade, near Jabeek in the province of Limburg, has significantly enhanced understanding of the former site and its surrounding landscape, despite the absence of substantial above-ground remains. The castle, which likely dates from the late medieval period, was demolished or fell into ruin by the seventeenth or early eighteenth century. Within the framework of the International Bauausstellung (IBA) Parkstad project, focused on landscape restoration and water management, several archaeological investigations were conducted, including archival research, coring, geophysical survey and excavation. The archaeological research has generally contributed to understanding the occupation history and use of the site. From the tenth century onwards, continuous human activities took place. The features and structures identified provide information on the layout and development of the location within the surrounding landscape. The recovered material—comprising ceramics, metal objects, animal remains, and building materials—offers insights into daily life and the material culture on the site, from the medieval through the post-medieval period.
The results of the investigations have also informed the subsequent landscape design of the site. Efforts were made to preserve archaeological values wherever possible, with the earliest moat phases largely preserved in situ. Where interventions were necessary, they were designed in alignment with historical structures, ensuring a careful integration of archaeological research, landscape development, and water management. The Etzenrade project thus demonstrates how archaeological research can contribute both to knowledge production and to the responsible management of a largely vanished castle site.
